Mandatory Education

1. Mandatory Extravaganza!

Regulations require that the following topics be taught on an annual basis:

  • Patient's and resident's rights

  • Confidentiality

  • Fire prevention and response

  • Emergency preparedness

  • Accident prevention and safety procedures

  • Infection control and prevention

  • Incidents and diseases subject to mandatory reporting

  • Care of patients/residents with unique needs

  • Proper use and documentation of restraints

  • Abuse and Neglect (mandatory in Nebraska)

  • Dining assistance, nutritional risks, and hydration of residents (SD only)

Avera Education & Staffing Solutions Mandatory Extravaganza a 3 1/2 hour in-service covering any, or all, of the above listed mandatory topics. Some facilities schedule an extravaganza in the morning and repeat it in the afternoon so all staff members are able to attend one of the sessions.

 2. Residents Rights/Confidentiality

This program reviews the rights of clients in healthcare facilities. Information is provided on how to identify a violation of a client's rights and what intervention measures should be taken. Confidentiality is always an issue! This program also includes a review of how confidentiality is mandated by the HIPAA laws.

 3. This In-service is a Disaster!

Actually, this in-service is one disaster after another. We discuss what employees should do to protect themselves, and those they care for, if they are faced with an emergency. Participants learn how to respond appropriately to a flood, tornado, or fire. Seasonal safety tips are discussed.  Bomb threats are also reviewed during this program.

 4. Infection Protection

Infection control is not only a mandatory education subject, but it is a very HOT TOPIC as well.  Your clients (and staff) are vulnerable to microscopic organisms that, in the past, were very treatable but are now becoming increasingly resistant to standard treatments. During this in-service, we discuss some of the 'bugs' that may affect clients and staff in your facility.

5. "Please Release Me, Let Me Go"

This educational presentation is designed for the family members of a resident in a long-term care facility. Laws and regulations governing the use of restraints are discussed as well as alternatives to using chemical or physical restraints. This program may also be geared toward health care workers.

6. Abuse and Neglect

Abuse and Neglect is always a concern in long-term care.  Healthcare providers are obligated by law to report any instances of abuse and/or neglect committed in long-term care facilities.  In addition, surveyors are looking for your policies on Abuse and Neglect reporting and handling procedures.

This two-hour in-service will train your staff in many types of abuse and how to identify a resident who has been abused or who is at risk of being abused.  Also, personality traits of a person likely to commit abuse will be described.
