Leadership Skills

The Building Effective Leadership Skills series will help leaders in the healthcare workplace recognize the importance of company values, develop effective leadership styles, coach for performance accountability, develop communication skills and confidence, promote positive team building, empower others and deal with professional stress.

The series is specifically designed for nurse managers, charge nurses, team leaders, administrators, human resource personnel and supervisors in healthcare facilities.  There are six sessions in the leadership series, each running from one to one-and-a-half-hours.  You may choose to have all six sessions presented in your facility or any combination of the sessions.  During several of the sessions, participants will be given assignments, therefore, dividing your sessions over different visits is strongly recommended.  Dividing the sessions allows the presenter to assist participants in evaluating their goals in achieving improved leadership capabilities.

Your Role as the Charge Nurse?

This two-hour in-service will assist the Charge Nurse, whether new or experienced, to understand and effectively assume the required responsibilities of the Charge Nurse.

The importance of delegation is discussed as well as an explanation of how the licensed nurse is accountable for the delegated task.

Communication is a key factor in positive working relationships and it is proven that ineffective communication can negatively impact the entire healthcare team. Effective communication styles and techniques are taught to help the Charge Nurse develop a trusting relationship with all members of the team and especially with unlicensed assistive personnel.

The professional role of the entire healthcare team is discussed and appropriate intervention techniques reviewed to help the Charge Nurse modify any unprofessional or inappropriate behavior.

Also, every Charge Nurse faces a multitude of diverse and challenging situations. Therefore, critical thinking skills and techniques will be identified and applied to a variety of examples. This practice will assist the Charge Nurse in utilizing those skills in becoming a more effective leader of the healthcare team.

Communication 101

Communication is the glue that holds our relationships together. When there is a break in communication, lots of things can fall apart. Learn to recognize different styles of communication. The importance of clear communication and good listening skills are discussed during this inservice.
